Hate Crime

A hate crime is any criminal offence committed against someone because of their disability, gender identity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.
These offences are motivated by hostility or prejudice towards a person’s identity or perceived identity.

Hate crimes can take many forms, including:

  • Threatening behaviour
  • Assault
  • Robbery
  • Damage to property
  • Inciting others to commit hate crimes
  • Harassment

Some incidents may not be criminal offences but are still considered hate incidents and can escalate into more serious crimes. Hate crime occur anywhere – in public spaces, at school, in the workplace, within communities, and online.
